Understanding how people use websites

What people say and what people do are often quite different.

This represents a complex challenge. To overcome this Nomensa use a number of proven evaluation techniques to ensure the feedback is both useful and can be applied to improving the product.

A focus group can show you what people think of a product, their first impression. However, a focus group will not uncover the most useful data: what people actually do with a product. That requires 'usability testing'.

We measure both the user's attitude and behaviour to ensure a complete picture of user requirements can be generated. Once we understand the needs of your users we can then determine the level of technology required to ensure that they can successfully interact with your product.

The past

In the past, technology has led the way for development. Internet applications were based on the latest functionality available without regard to whether it was useful, relevant or enjoyable. This approach was compounded with too much focus being placed on the 'look' rather than the structure and the users' abilities: This resulted in the launch of many unsuccessful ventures, billions in wasted revenue and the eventual dot-bomb of 2001.

We recognise that it is vital that digital technologies allow people to create the experience they want from it: after all, we are all different.

Best practice

When considering digital technology, five questions need to be understood:

  1. What are your users' goals?
  2. What do your users want to accomplish on your site?
  3. How does your site help them do that?
  4. How successful do your users find your site?
  5. Have you got the right mix of technology for your users?
