Director of Accessibility
Léonie leads web accessibility strategy and research at Nomensa. An expert in the field of assistive technologies, she is also responsible for ensuring that all developments meet UK and international legislation.
Léonie began research initiatives in 2002, with an investigation into the FTSE 100 websites. Since then other business sectors have been investigated and in 2006 Léonie led the first United Nations global audit of web accessibility.
Léonie is fully committed to raising the profile of web accessibility and has been instrumental in supporting several industry milestones. Invited by the British Standards Institution to contribute to the first British standard for web accessibility, Léonie also leads Nomensa’s involvement with the Accessibility Interoperability Alliance.
Léonie is regularly asked to speak at conferences and can often be heard on Radio 4’s In Touch programme. She also contributes regularly in the press and on television.
Experience
Before joining Nomensa, Léonie was a web developer with UK Online for three years. The experience of losing her sight in 2000 ignited her passion for web accessibility and transformed Léonie into an advocate for web standards.
Léonie is one of only a handful of people in the world with her skills. She offers a unique combination of technical knowledge and personal perspective, helping Nomensa’s clients understand the importance of humanising technology.
