Nomensa were able to deliver very quickly and gave a comprehensive report showing where work was needed.  The level of detail enabled Havering to decide whether the issue was with technology or users.

Action plans are being put in place, which would not have been possible without the help of Nomensa.

1 Challenge

The London Borough of Havering is strategically aiming to achieve and maintain Double-A compliance of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) v1.0.

They commissioned Nomensa to conduct an Accessibility Audit on the website to understand the current level of accessibility compliance achieved and assess the impact of making any improvements.

2 Process

The audit for www.havering.gov.uk assessed 30 pages against WCAG 1.0 up to, and including Priority 1, 2 and 3 checkpoints. The audit incorporated both automated and manual testing to ensure that every guideline and checkpoint was carefully considered.

The website was also checked by Nomensa's head of accessibility, Léonie Watson, a screen reader expert and user, to give a real world perspective on the current level of accessibility achieved and the impact on the user experience.

Nomensa delivered a results report with tangible recommendations on where to revise the technology and website to improve and sustain accessibility levels.

3 Outcomes

Within one week of receiving the audit results, Havering had already implemented some of Nomensa’s recommendations for improvements.

This includes processes for web editors and reviewers, template maintenance and identifying other short and longer term goals to raise accessibility standards.
