The Challenge
The current intranet for HMCS was quickly brought together from several information sources. Due to time constraints there was little time to structure content in a user friendly manner, and formalised Information Architecture work was not possible.
In addition, the fast growth of content had resulted in a number of structural information problems and ultimately a user experience that was not efficient.
Nomensa were commissioned to review and redefine the Information Architecture for HMCS to improve the findability of information on the intranet and deliver a much improved experience for users.
The Process
Nomensa worked with HMCS to interview stakeholders from regions across the UK. Card sorting exercises were conducted and the results presented in a workshop to ensure a high level of knowledge transfer.
Following this, a new Information Architecture structure and set of wireframes were developed along with a fully comprehensive Information Architecture Reference Guide to support the implementation and maintenance of the newly proposed Information Architecture structure.
The Outcomes
A logical clear set of site maps and wireframes now form an excellent structure for HMCS to implement. This caters for varied audience groups across the UK. HMCS found the rationale explanations which accompanied the new structure very helpful and they are now confident in taking the new improved structure forward as part of their intranet refresh project.
