We are extremely pleased with the work that Nomensa did for us and were impressed at how quickly their project team familiarised themselves with the rail industry's structure and terminology. Working within a tight timescale, they provided us with everything we needed for the successful launch our new website on our target date.

Challenge
The forthcoming merger of The Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) with the Health and Safety Executive meant there was a need to merge the respective websites providing industry information on safety and economic regulation.
The ORR website architecture was to be revisited with a view to improving the user journeys, making the two organisations appear as a whole, whilst enabling its users to find the specific information they require.
ORR employed Nomensa to adopt a user-centred approach in order to address the needs of their key audiences – rail industry specialists and members of the public.
Process
Whilst understanding the structure of the rail industry and therefore its audience’s needs, Nomensa grasped the importance of potential synergies of content from the two existing websites.
Nomensa undertook an in depth user study to develop a new structure incorporating the merged content of both websites. This included a card sorting exercise and analysis, online surveys, interactive information architecture development, usability testing and further refinement.
Outcomes
A new website structure was developed, accommodating the wealth of information from both areas of the organisations. Exactly meeting user’s requirements, it enables people to retrieve the information they need without drilling down through many levels of the website hierarchy and is easily maintained and developed by the ORR.
