Human centred design
Nomensa
gave a talk at the International Visual Communications Association (IVCA) Excellence Online Seminar held at MSN
headquarters in London. The seminar focused on effective and ethical
communications, and Nomensa spoke about human centred design and the
issues concerning usability and web accessibility.
The seminar was introduced by Bronwyn Kunhardt, Head of Image and Reputation at MSN UK, and hosted by Wayne Drew, CEO for the IVCA. Explaining that effective and ethical communications are at the core of corporate responsibility, Wayne Drew clarified the intention of the seminar as introducing some successful business models establishing best practice in the industry of accessible communications.
Simon Norris, managing director of Nomensa, spoke about why most websites fail, and explained the advantages of implementing Human Centred Design. He also presented the Haringey Council website as a case study as evidence of successful implementation.
Léonie Watson, accessibility consultant for Nomensa, followed with an inspirational talk on accessibility and Corporate Social Responsibility, and then went on to present the findings of Nomensa’s report on the accessibility of the FTSE 100 company websites.
Also speaking at the seminar was Mark Hawkins from Twofour TV and Stephen Watson, MD of CTN, both giving insightful talks on effective intranet broadcasting and how business and government are exploiting the televisual medium.
Tom Adams from the office of the e-envoy gave a very informative talk about E-accessibility issues, clarifying the DDA’s application to web accessibility, and international standards outlined in the W3C access guidelines.
The seminar was a significant opportunity for leaders in the field of online communication to present some of the latest developments in ICT, identify some of the barriers to E-accessibility, and offer solutions to better understand effective E-communication. The seminar ended with a short question and answer period that highlighted some corporate attitudes towards accessible web service provision, and the consequences when E-commerce is confused with the basic need for accessible information.
The IVCA Excellence Online seminar proved to be a significant event in developing best practice standards in the field of usable and accessible communications, and was a valuable session exchanging professional knowledge about effective and ethical communications online.
