Implementing and maintaining a web accessibility strategy in local government is not impossible when there is a strong commitment, good leadership, and carefully selected partnerships according to speakers at yesterday’s Ebase Technology Seminar.
Nomensa were invited to speak at an accessibility seminar organised by Ebase, that highlighted the work of Haringey Council and its partners in their journey towards developing an award winning, triple-A website. www.haringey.gov.uk
Alun David, Project Manager for the Haringey site, gave a lively account of the process and critical success factors for delivering an accessible website. Simon Norris, managing director of Nomensa and Léonie Watson, head of accessibility at Nomensa spoke about implementing and sustaining web accessibility, explaining the impact it has on social responsibility. Nomensa were responsible for the design and implementation of the site, integrating it with the Obtree C4 Content Management System.
Members of Ebase covered topics that explained the importance of
accessibility, and the technology involved in making electronic form
delivery accessible to triple-A standards.
Both Norris and Watson
lead an interesting debate around some of the key issues raised by the
audience such as sourcing accessible content management systems,
meeting Government targets and the expected impact of the soon to be
released second version of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines
(WCAG v 2.0).
Representatives from both the public and private sector attended the seminar, including delegates from London Borough Councils such as Croydon, Harrow, and Hackney and delegates from organisations such as AXA UK, Capita and Watson Wyatt.
The diverse turnout provided an excellent opportunity for key
stakeholders from varying sectors to debate the issues
surrounding the implementation of web accessibility.
The Seminar took place on 17th of March at Canonbury Academy in London.
