Léonie Watson - head of accessibilityThis weekend saw Nomensa’s head of accessibility, Léonie Watson, speak amongst a panel of experts at the Global Compact Policy Dialogue about her experiences as a employed person with a disability.

The Global Compact Policy Dialogue was a three day conference, organised by the International Labour Organisation, part of the United Nations.

The key message of the Policy Dialogue is that discrimination in one form or another occurs in the world of work everyday throughout the world. At the same time, work is a privileged entry point from which to liberate society from discrimination.

Speaking around this key message, joining Watson on the panel was a member from the Trade Union Congress, a representative from the Disability Network in Ceylon and the CEO of ID Lanka. Specifically, Watson spoke about her role in a senior position as head of accessibility within a small company. Watson comments:

It's truly enlightening to understand the different approaches to disability in employment, being taken across the world. Awareness is being raised in all quarters to help people understand that there is nothing to fear from employing a disabled person, that here in the UK there are grants to assist with the costs of modifications or equipment and that for employers, the real strength is in playing to people's abilities, not their disabilities.
