Léonie Watson talks to Lorraine Kelly

Nomensa’s head of accessibility, Léonie Watson, spoke to Lorraine Kelly on the ITV show LK Today. As spokeswoman for the RNIB’s Open Your Eyes campaign, Watson looked back at the experience of losing her sight through a preventable eye condition.

Having lost her sight to Diabetic Retinopathy in her mid-twenties, Watson spoke candidly about the realities of knowing it could have been preventable. Speaking later, Watson said:

Losing your eyesight is a shattering experience, bearing the guilt of knowing it was your own fault makes it almost unbearable. Speaking so publicly wasn’t easy, but the issues are too important to ignore.

The RNIB Open Your Eyes campaign follows research that suggests 2 million people in the UK are at risk of losing their site unnecessarily. The RNIB report, Open Your Eyes, reveals that more than two million people in the UK are at risk of needlessly losing their sight. It also shows that more than half of all sight loss is avoidable. Unknowingly 1.9 million people with diabetes who aren't having regular eye tests and 250,000 people with early-stage glaucoma are at high risk of losing their sight. Further information of this campaign can be found on the RNIB website.

Watson recently spoke about losing her sight in the Sunday Times Style supplement.
