The band Coldplay picked up three prizes last night at the Digital Music Awards for their use of the Internet in marketing their music
Their site Coldplay.com won an award for the best official site and the digital marketing campaign for their latest album, X&Y, also picked up a prize.
The judges were impressed with Coldplay's innovative marketing methods and efforts to build a fan base through their endeavours online.
In particular, their interactive award winning radio station, Coldplayer.com, which features some of the band members' favourite songs by other artists, was seen as key to increasing the number of fans.
Other artists to win awards included Damon Albarn's virtual cartoon band, Gorrillaz, along with Robbie Williams, U2 and Nastasha Beddingfield, all of which were praised for embracing new technology as a means of promotion.
With the rise of the iPod, music and Internet now work hand in hand, as millions of songs are sold online everyday.
Recent figures from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry show digital sales to have tripled in the first half of 2005 alone.
As CD sales continue to fall, digital sales have risen to six per cent of total record industry retail revenues.
