Taxpayers in Burnley can now pay their council tax via the Burnley Borough Council's website.

As part of its ongoing eGovernment developments, taxpayers can now set up direct debit payments of council tax through the Internet.

To encourage people to access the web, anyone who signs up within the next month will be entered into a prize draw to win a 12-month gym membership.

"Setting up a direct debit is the easiest way for residents to pay their council tax as the bill will automatically be paid every month," said councillor Peter Kenyon, an executive member of the council.

He went on to say that direct debit also helped cut administration costs, meaning more money could be spent on other services.
