A new website judging the quality of life in different areas has hit the web.

Local businesses, authorities and people potentially moving to an area can now check out the standard of services in the region.

The new Area Profiles website, set up by the audit commission, has gathered together a huge range of information on local authorities and put it all into one easy access website.

The site includes scores and assessments on local public services made by independent inspectors. It has also compiled views of local citizens including the results of best value performance and healthcare surveys.

The website offers visitors an easy way to compare local authorities, which in turn will help increase competition between authorities and boost overall standards.

"Area profiles are an invaluable tool for those driving continual improvement in public services," says Peter Wilkinson, managing director for strategy and resources at the audit commission.

"They bring contextual and performance information together in one place, spanning the range of public bodies that deliver services locally, and allowing people to compare performance," he added.

As the website attracts visitors, the commission plans to expand the website including more data and a further variety of assessments on public services.
