Efforts to use ICT for the benefit and improvement of the environment are to be rewarded.

Entries are now being accepted for the 2005 eWell-Being Awards and the hunt is on for the local authority, business or voluntary group that has best harnessed ICT for the benefit of the environment.

The competition has a number of different categories, ranging from digital inclusion, age and disability to climate change and environmental efficiency.

"Winning an award can really help put an organisation on the map and can encourage others to follow examples of best practice," explained one of the organisers of the awards, professor Peter James.

Examples of winning entries from last year's competition include the UK Phenology Network, a project linking up 13,000 volunteers who record when the natural signs of spring and autumn occur.

Another example is the South Witham broadband network, a community Internet service linking up local villages with high-speed Internet access.

The awards are the result of collaboration between SustainIT and BT, which successfully attracted 124 entries for last year's competition.
