The majority of local services will be e-enabled by the new year, minister for local e-government, Jim Fitzpatrick announced.

For the last five years, the local e-government programme has been encouraging and working with local authorities to improve the provision of services through technology.

"Over the last five years local government has taken up the challenge to transform the way that citizens are able to access the services," Mr Fitzpatrick said.

"It is very satisfying that e-enablement targets have now been reached."

He added that compared to the websites of some of the companies in the FTSE, local authority sites were often better in terms of download speeds.

The next step for the development of e-government is to ensure that local people are aware of the new technologically enhanced local services and actually use them.

To reach theses new targets Mr Fitzpatrick has launched a national public awareness e-government campaign to start in the new year.
