The search engine Google is to launch a new feature to help music fans keep up to date with their favourite bands or singers.

Internet users who enter a name of an artist into the search engine will get a link to Google's specifically music-orientated results page.

The page will display a list of the artist's albums, lyrics and cover art as well as links to web-based music shops offering fans the opportunity to download their favourite song or order CDs.

There is no charge for the new service but it is hoped it will attract a high number of advertisers keen to plug in to the demand for downloadable music.

However, Google isn't the first search engine to offer such a facility with Yahoo and Ask Jeeves already offering similar music specific web searches.

Currently the search feature provides links to mainly US-based artists, but plans are afoot to increase the range of the search.
