North Lanarkshire council is set to invest £5 million in extending its existing IT services.

Over the next four years the money will go towards developing network solutions, telecoms technology and data networking servers.

The council hopes the investment will reap long-term savings and allow resources to be transferred from administrative duties to providing frontline services.

"This partnership will provide a platform for internal ICT professional staff to exploit emerging information and telecommunications technologies that will accelerate departmental ICT priorities in line with their service improvement plans," explained Mike Gilmour, head of ICT at the council.

As the competition in e-government developments grows, it has been announced that Winchester city council will also be investing £2.5 million in a data solutions project.
