A new website has been developed to help doctors learn more about how to diagnose patients suffering from bird flu.

Developed by the Health Protection Agency (HPA), the online course helps doctors choose the correct course of treatment for patients by providing a variety of different case studies.

These include examples such as a holidaymaker returning from Thailand with possible flu-type symptoms to a worried patient wanting to get a flu vaccine

"We have worked in close partnership with doctors.net over the last 12 months in developing online training courses for doctors," explained Dr John Simpson from the HPA.

"We are aiming to train around 10,000 to 15,000 primary care doctors," he added.

The web-based training programme will also provide information on the national contingency plans that are in place in case of a flu pandemic as well as advice on how to develop their own local contingency plans.

Doctors can download the programme from the doctors.net website.
