Emails and text messages that self-destruct after they have been read are to be launched.

The text service, Stealthtext, is the first self-deleting software to be released on to the market.

This latest use of the text message allows people to send messages that will disappear within 40 seconds of being opened.

The concept is aimed at business executives dealing with highly confidential information as well as celebrities who too often send text messages or emails they would prefer to keep away from the prying eyes of tabloid editors.

According its creators, Staellium UK, Stealthtext has already caught the attention of celebrity agents and the financial services industry.

"The ability to send a self-destruct message has massive benefits for people from all walks of life, from everyday mobile users, through to celebrities and business people, but this is just the start," said Staellium chief executive Carole Barnum.

The text messaging service will be followed by the launch of self-destructing emails as well as voice and picture messaging in Spring 2006.

Anyone in the UK with a WAP phone can sign up for the current text service.
