A digital archive of poetry readings has been launched online by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA).

The Poetry Archive is currently recording major poets reading their own works and then digitising them for posterity and the enjoyment of everyone online.

The scheme has been created by poet laureate Andrew Motion and recording producer Richard Carrington, with the help of the MLA.

"MLA supports any initiative that aims to evoke a love of reading or that safeguards our heritage, and this audio archive does both," said Mark Wood, the chairman of the council.

"It will be a valuable resource both educationally and culturally."

The online poetry collection has also been designed to be as user-friendly as possible for both the visually impaired and those with hearing difficulties.

The readings can be accessed at poetryarchive.org, where you can access a range of background material and educational resources for free to enhance the enjoyment of the poems.
