The increasing popularity and accessibility of the world wide web is delivering a revolution in the way people shop is being blamed for the continuing slump in the newspaper industry.
Increasing numbers of people are moving online when searching and shopping for goods, and as such are less likely to pick up a newspaper with their regular shop.
As consumers turn to the Internet to provide them with all their needs, newspapers do not feature high on the agenda of the average online shopper, because the Internet provides them with free, up-to-the-minute news and information.
There is also the opportunity for those interested in the news to find out all they can on a news topic from a variety of sources, without needing to spend anything on those publications.
As such, industry analysts are urging more newspapers - in particular local titles - to invest in online divisions with strong advertising platforms.
An increasing number of experts are coming to the conclusion that advertising through websites is the only way that publishers can sustain their future.© DeHavilland Information Services plc
