The European Internet Accessibility Observatory (EIAO) has announced plans to build an online tool for monitoring web accessibility.

According to the EIAO the aim of the project is to provide ranking lists of accessible web sites in order to fuel competition, leading to improvements and raised awareness.

In also hopes to provide more detailed information about accessibility to enable policy makers to design more effective policies and encourage web developers to improve their sites.

The group is calling for input from all interested parties in the form of an online survey.

The EIAO, founded last year, is co-ordinated by Agder University College Norway and aims to put in place systems for a systematic overview of the current use of accessibility guidelines in Europe.

All the software developed in the project will be released under an open source licence and kinds of website providers will be assessed though the focus will be on public services, governmental and local authorities, and private service providers like banks, public transport etc.© DeHavilland Information Services plc
