Universities throughout Europe are looking to increase their e-learning capabilities, according to a new report.

Taking advantage of more sophisticated systems and cheaper network infrastructures, over the next two years, three quarters of the universities surveyed said that they will increase the amount of computer-based learning on offer to students, according to e-learning solutions provider, WebCT.

The UK government, is currently investing heavily in e-learning in schools and is encouraging universities to boost their options for online education, despite the high-profile failure of its first e-university, UKeU.

WebCT chief Carol Vallone suggested that universities are now waking up to the potential for e learning facilities, which in some cases can enable students to study subjects without the need to ever physically attend their university, thereby making it easier for universities to recruit from further afield.© DeHavilland Information Services plc
