The government has today announced a new online initiative as part of its national sustainable development strategy for England.
Environment secretary Margaret Beckett described the new Internet maps of England, as a "happiness index", according to the Scotsman, showing and contrasting the quality of life in communities throughout the UK.
The new online government service will "give everyone access to data-on-the-doorstep", said Ms Beckett, and "give local groups support, information and training to influence what goes on where they live".
The environment secretary added that this new Internet service will provide a valuable tool when introduced although the finished article is still approximately five years away in development.
"By 2010 we will develop a new comprehensive set of web-based maps and statistics that will give complete information about the quality of everyone's local environment in England," Ms Beckett noted.
