Figures released today by the Office for National Statistics reveal an increase in the number of active internet subscriptions in January, led by permanent broadband connections.
The active subscriptions index increased by 1.1 per cent between December 2004 and January 2005 to 133.7.
This marks the first significant monthly increase following a period of relatively static figures between February and December 2004.
The increase in subscriptions was boosted by broadband, which now accounts for 41 per cent of all connections, showing a year on year increase of 86.2 per cent in new subscriptions and a five per cent increase in January.
Dial-up connections continue to dominate the market, however, despite a year on year fall to January 2005 of 22.4 per cent.© DeHavilland Information Services plc
