Orange and France Telecom are working in collaboration with one of the leading pioneers in web browser technology Opera Software to explore ways to improve mobile Internet usability.
Reports today suggest the companies are trying to add a browser-like home screen to mobile phones which, in addition to usability, could also enhance data services.
The move develops on from Opera's celebrated Platform offering that replaces current idle homescreens on handsets with operator branded user interfaces based on Opera's standards-based Web technology.
Eric Dufresne, CEO of the France Telecom and research and development department said that the opportunities were almost limitless.
"Opera's idea of using Web technologies to develop a better, more uniform user interface and portfolio of services across our product line is very much complementary to our own approach," commented Mr Dufresne.
"Opera's standards-based approach will make us able to offer users a far better end-user experience across multiple platforms, and at the same time, increasing data usage."
The CEO added: "This will be a real revenue booster that takes advantage of our investment in high-capacity networks."© DeHavilland Information Services plc
