Councils throughout the UK will be closely watching a new accessibility initiative as it is launched by South Tyneside Council to help meet e-government targets.
IShareMaps is an advanced web-based mapping system that will provide greater and easier Internet access for individuals to council information and maps.
Road safety news and planning applications will also be incorporated, probably by the beginning of next year.
For maximum accessibility, the web maps will eventually be rolled out to a network of PCs at sites including community centres.
Dave Bowman, South Tyneside's information manager, told Information World Review: "Initially, iShareMaps will give people access to information about local facilities such as GPs and schools. They will be able to find out what is in their areas.
"We will meet the government's e-government priority outcomes by the end of the new financial year. Then we will be embedding mapping into all other areas."
If successful, a series of other councils throughout the UK are expected to introduce similar accessibility-enhancing initiatives.© DeHavilland Information Services plc
