Broadband is celebrating its fifth birthday in the UK, and looks as fresh and popular as ever with prices coming down and speeds and user numbers going up.

The first broadband consumer product was launched by in March 2000, and according to independent comparison service uSwitch.com, the UK is likely to see a broadband boom this year.

Figures form the telecoms regulator, Ofcom predict broadband connections will climb to nine million by the end of 2005 - uSwitch expects 95 per cent of Internet connections to be via broadband by 2008.

"We as consumers are currently in a perfect situation to purchase broadband as competition and technological advancement take hold," said Jon Miller, director of uSwitch.com.

"Faster speeds and improved customer service will increasingly become important in this competitive market."

Almost one in five British people spend four hours a day or more surfing the net - and 42 per cent of internet users are watching music videos and film trailers via broadband connections.© DeHavilland Information Services plc
