The National Federation of the Blind (NFB) has today handed out a non-visual accessibility certification to its first US-based pharmaceutical company, Merck & Co.
The NFB-NVA award recognises web sites that are brought up to the same accessibility standard for people who are blind as to those for the sighted.
Marc Maurer, president of the NFB, the largest consumer organisation of blind people in the US, explained: "Many blind people are computer savvy and want to use the Internet to improve their personal and professional lives.
"Doing what needs to be done to make a web site accessible is not only good business, but a step forward on the road to total equality for blind people."
Calls have been made by industry experts to introduce similar initiatives to the NFB-NVA accessibility certification on a broader international level.© DeHavilland Information Services plc
