Thousands of people in the UK have turned to the Internet as means to voice their insistence that autism is treated as one of the major issues in the approaching General Election campaign.
The National Autistic Society (NAS) has, in collaboration with charity group TreeHouse, launched the www.AutismCounts.org.uk website through which voters can lobby their candidates to sign the Autism Manifesto.
This exploit into the use of campaigning websites will allow petitioners to mail candidates and encourage a dialogue on key Manifesto issues plus keep those with autism up to date on developments through regular newsletters.
Stuart Notholt, director of communications and public affairs at the NAS explained: "We estimate that over 535,000 people have autism in UK - so including friends and families about 3,000 people are affected per constituency.
"AutismCounts and the Autism Manifesto address real issues facing people with autism and together the NAS and Treehouse are campaigning for change. We are raising the stakes during this General Election and ensuring that autism is on the Government agenda to stay."
He continued: " Awareness is rising, as are the numbers of people diagnosed with autism, and we are seizing this opportunity to give people with autism and their families a voice."© DeHavilland Information Services plc
