Brighton has become one of the first areas to receive wireless broadband through the Wi-Max system.

The city now has 90 per cent coverage of the technology that can offer high speed Internet access to distances of up to 30 miles.

The system offers Internet access where conventional systems such as DSL and cable are prohibitively expensive.

The system has been installed by Metranet, a Brighton company that evolved from the cities grass roots Wi-Fi culture that has rapidly spread through the city in recent years thanks to a high concentration of students and businesses.© DeHavilland Information Services plc
