Train operator GNER is planning to expand its Wi-fi services on its East Coast services to provide wholesale Internet accessibility.

GNER are aiming to equip trains with technology that will allow passengers to check their email and browse the internet whilst onboard.

GNER was the first operator to offer in-train Wi-Fi services back in 2003 and has since expanded the project to include a further ten trains.

The train company is planning to allow all passengers access to the service by May 2007.

GNER's chief operating officer Jonathan Metcalfe says: "We believe the expanded Wi-Fi service will encourage more people to choose rail instead of driving or flying, at a time when we are introducing many more comfortable and reliable trains.

"Wireless internet is already proving invaluable to our business customers as a means of transforming train time into more productive working time."

It is expected that first class passengers will be offered the service for free, whilst other travellers will be required to pay a charge to access the technology.© DeHavilland Information Services plc
