In a move that could soon spread across the Atlantic to British shores taxis in San Francisco are installing interactive panels so passengers can local information and news using a touch screen from the backseat.

According to vnunet the system offers real time news headlines and streaming video from both CNN and local media, as well as entertainment guides and restaurant and film listings.

"Taxi drivers love this," Interactive Taxi chief executive Corey Gottlieb told vnunet.com.

"One driver told me he had a bunch of kids in the back and they were all quiet because they were playing with the display."

Mr Gottlieb said that future versions will have a built in credit card reader to enable passengers to pay for their ride as well as enhanced services such as reserving or buying movie tickets.© DeHavilland Information Services plc
