Credit card giant MasterCard has launched a new set of awards to promote and encourage usability in the financial services market.

Called the Usability Excellence Awards for web sites MasterCard's Jennifer Ruffino said: "The purpose is to help bring attention to usability as a critical aspect of web design."

MasterCard will judge sites in two categories: e-commerce sites, including online retailers and payment processing organisations; and financial-services sites offering online banking and bill payment.

MasterCard will choose winners based on seven criteria of usability: navigation, information architecture, accessibility, error prevention/recovery, written content, customer support and interface design.

The awards reflect the growing awareness amongst online retailers and service providers that website usability not only improves the experience of customers but can increase overall customer numbers.© DeHavilland Information Services plc
