Computers and the Internet are being harnessed in north Durham in order to provide students with 'visual learning' technology.

As part of Derwentside District Council's aspirations begin at home project (ABAH) 300 computers will be distributed.

Visual learning is being co-ordinated through the Guardian's Learnpremium website.

It costs each school around £1,800 to access the site, Derwentside District Council councillor Janice Doherty, told the Northern Echo: "Access to the worldwide web is very exciting; it's the doorway to a whole new world, but that can be daunting when searching on one key-word can throw up literally thousands of sites.

"It gives pupils, teachers and parents a focus, taking them on a colourful, eye-catching journey through the curriculum."

Despite the seemingly high cost of access to the resources local education officials state that the investment is well worth it due to the benefits they provides.© DeHavilland Information Services plc
