The healthcare sector in Southampton has received a significant boost today after officials confirmed the city's planned pioneering use of the web to offer residents detailed informative e-services.

The advanced offerings go onto a new public website launched recently by the Southampton City Primary Care Trust.

Designers hope the services will improve the delivery of health related information and promote health services within Southampton.

The service will provide the first port of call for over 240,000 residents in the area as well as uniting the day-to-day working operations of all the region's staff and separate hospitals and care centres.

Sarah Reed, website editor for Southampton City PCT commented: "The new website has moved away from being a purely informative site to one that offers its visitors and staff the opportunity to get involved.

"The ability to compile online forms and databases has also added a new dimension to the way the Trust gives out and receives information."

This useful new use of the web is hoped to provide the first of many stepping-stones in improvements for the city's health sector.

"The next step for the Trust is to create a community of websites," added Ms Reed.

"The flexibility of the solution means that partnering organisations such as local GP's, Dentists and Opticians can create and maintain their own website, each with a distinct design and domain name."© DeHavilland Information Services plc
