The use of the Internet for shopping purposes will continue to proliferate during the next six months, according to retail giant Asda.

The supermarket has said that it is aiming to exploit this trend and double the size of its home shopping service before 2006.

Asda has also indicated that it is confident of meeting its penetration target set in January this year of reaching 60 per cent of UK households by September.

The popularity of the Internet as a retail tool has seen the group already double its online range to 20,000 food and non-food product lines and invest more than £7 million in its home delivery service.

These developments have seen some 21 stores added to the service, taking the total number of outlets offering delivery to 53.

"We're constantly increasing the number of delivery slots available for customers," said Asda e-commerce director David Rutley.

"In the past 12 months we've focused heavily on improving the usability of the service," he added.
