One of the leading figures within the community broadband industry has claimed that local initiatives are currently being run in more than 550 towns and villages across the UK.

Malcolm Corbett is the director of the Community Broadband Network (CBN) and it is his firm that discovered this substantial rise in community broadband networks.

According to CBN, the various projects are operated by a mix of social enterprises, local businesses, voluntary groups and public sector organisations, almost all of which are using economical wireless technology to deliver their services.

"The vast majority of those engaged are passionate about ensuring affordable broadband reaches their whole community," Mr Corbett told eGov Monitor.

He added that CBN and groups such as the Access to Broadband Campaign are working to bring together community networks, establishing a new regional support network to complement its national activities.

The projects all share the same aim, to help more people get connected to the internet and develop local media services.© DeHavilland Information Services plc
