A pioneering new use of the Internet looks to have enhanced relations between the general public and local police officers in Peterborough.

Cambridgeshire constabulary launched the live webchat initiative to encourage citizens to ask officers questions and seek advice.

Chief superintendent Paul Phillipson yesterday covered 11 different topics with members of the public including neighbourhood policing and safety on buses.

The monitored webchat also had 27 items posted to the site and was accessed a total of 488 times.

Chief superintendent Phillipson commented: "Yet again the webchat has proved a great success and I am delighted that so many new people have taken the opportunity to log on and speak to me live online.

"We know from other correspondence we have had in the past that people have views and concerns and issues they want to raise with me, but have not had the channels in which to get those issues to me."

He added that the Internet forum has now closed to questions although the popularity of the service is likely to see it continued in the near future.© DeHavilland Information Services plc
