Mobile accessibility is to be brought into line with desktop capabilities thanks to a new initiative being launched by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

The new scheme, the Mobile Web Initiative (MWI), will initially focus on two areas through two working groups, those being best practices and mobile device descriptions.

Designers hope to help develop authoring guidelines, checklists and best practices to aid content providers maximise the quality of mobile device internet content.

Content authors will be able to adapt their content to a particular device, meanwhile, as the Device Description Working Group works to address the development of improved device description solutions.

"Mobile accessibility has been a second class experience for far too long," explained Tim Berners-Lee, director of W3C.

"MWI recognizes the mobile device as a first class participant, and will produce materials to help developers make the mobile web experience worthwhile. "© DeHavilland Information Services plc
