Ofcom may introduce an industry wide classification system for everything from TV shows, online videos and music downloads, according to reports.

Ofcom board member, Tim Suter, told the Financial Times: "We're asking whether it is possible to find a common framework behind labelling of content. A uniform labelling system would be very helpful."

According to the paper Ofcom hopes the new system would provide "clear, accurate and timely advice about content", including Internet content.

However, Mr Suter said that Ofcom was not seeking to expand its role in regulation of the Internet and the labelling system was part of a move to improve media literacy.© DeHavilland Information Services plc
