The Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) has launched its seventh annual competition for local e-commerce companies.

The DTI/InterForum E-Commerce Awards offer a top prize of £50,000 and is given to the firm that shows the greatest innovation in the application of information and communication technologies.

The NWDA deliberately targets companies who, through their work, improves the business performance of small and medium sized enterprises (SME) in the UK.

"This is a great opportunity for us to work alongside our partners in highlighting, celebrating and rewarding innovation in the use of ICT," commented the chief executive of the NWDA, Steven Broomhead.

"The awards reflect the changing needs of UK businesses, and winners will show how their use of ICT has improved their overall efficiency, productivity and competitiveness."

New categories have been introduced this year to reflect the changing face of e-business.

These include best use of broadband, best use of teleworking, best use of mobile and wireless technology and the most integrated business.

BT's regional director for the Northwest, Brian Crouch added: "The Awards foster exactly the spirit of innovation and excellence embodied by our customers.

"Like the DTI, BT recognises the value of IT and communications technologies to Britain's small business sector."

The closing date for entries is July 29th and is open to any UK business in the sector that has less than 250 employees. The awards ceremony will take place on October 6th.© DeHavilland Information Services plc
