The UK government's technical policies for public sector information systems will be subjected to formal accessibility and usability standards, according to reports.

eGov Monitor suggests that the move is likely to occur if final consultations on the subject do receive official approval as expected by the end of next week.

The principal was first sounded out last month by the European Commission who proposed all EU member states should make accessibility a technical requirement of all public sector IT procurements.

The commission urged the move in order to prohibit the upkeep of any sites that currently disadvantages or excludes anyone with a disability.

All government IT and web projects could therefore be aligned with anti-discrimination law.

If approved, the new measures would constitute part of the e-Government Interoperability Framework, the underlying technical standards of the UK's eGovernment strategy.© DeHavilland Information Services plc
