Latest figures show that nearly half of UK web users are accessing the Internet via broadband.

The Office of National Statistics (ONS) has released the latest monthly update to the survey of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) which shows that between April 2004 and April 2005 there was a 5.1 per cent increase in the number of UK active subscriptions to the Internet.

Broadband accounts for almost as many subscriptions as dial-up access and the report claims that dial-up is gradually being eliminated as a choice for consumers.

The ONS's latest monthly update to its survey of ISPs shows broadband connections soared while dial-up internet connections fell 25.2 per cent in the year to April 2005.

The latest monthly decrease, from March to April 2005, was 2.9 per cent.

The increase in the market share for permanent connections reflected the continuing move from slower dial-up connections to quicker broadband, cable and leased line technologies.
