Councils throughout Wales are being encouraged to study an inventive scheme launched in Ceredigion to develop and implement assistive technology for use by older people in their homes.

According to eGov monitor, the 'Ceredigion Assistive Technology at Home' project has been brought about by a Wales Assembly government capacity grant and involves social services collaborating with Ceredigion Care and Repair, local health trusts, ambulance, fire and rescue services plus Dyfed Powys Police.

The aim of the project is to implement sensors in homes which are capable of sending urgent messages of distress independently to a social services response team that will be available on a 24 hour basis, 365 days a year.

A spokesperson for the project indicated that they were hopeful of improving public safety and confidence as well as providing reassurance and peace of mind to the person and their informal carer.

The catchment area for the assistive technology project is Aberystwyth with a five mile surrounding radius.© DeHavilland Information Services plc
