Dorset county council has today introduced the first of several planned accessibility improvements to its website that are emblematic of the nationwide movement towards meeting e-government standards.
Having already transferred the majority of resources and information to the Internet, the council is now hoping to improve the speed and content of the site, as well as ensuring it is fully compliant with accessibility guidelines.
Martin Bottomley, the council's e-communications manager, said that the council believes this includes meeting eGMS standards.
"Being eGMS compliant improves the sharing of information between government websites," he said. "This makes it easier for users to find the content that is most relevant to them."
Responding to these and other changes being implemented by councils, Ian Dunmore of Public Sector Forums suggested that the public sector is at last showing its private counterpart a thing or two about good website accessibility.
