The UK spends more on public sector IT than any other European country, a recent study has found.
Analyst firm Kable's latest report, ICT spend in the European Public Sector, revealed that total expenditure on ICT in the UK is around £13.5 billion.
This sum is at least 40 per cent higher than that seen in either France of Germany.
Reports suggest that the UK's substantial investments in e-government services and back office infrastructure are attributable for this finding.
The £6 billion Connecting for Health programme and the £3.5 billion Defence Information Infrastructure deal have been cited as two notably significant contributors.
Kable analyst Scott Bryan said the report reveals the emergence of the UK as the leader in the breadth and diversity of its investment in public sector IT.
"The UK is one of the most advanced countries in terms of automating its services," said Mr Bryan. "The UK pursues technology that other countries don't."
He added: "One thing that stands out in the report is the UK government's commitment to use technology to modernise its processes."
The report also revealed that total expenditure on ICT in the European public sector will be in excess of £58 billion this year, rising to £63 billion by 2007.© DeHavilland Information Services plc
