The European Commission has launched a new online consultation to give business the opportunity to discuss how they feel the business environment in the EU can be improved.

The EU executive is keen to find out how businesses think the administrative burden can be reduced as part of its "Partnership for Jobs and Growth".

Through an online questionnaire, the Commission is asking companies and other interested parties to highlight particularly restrictive rules and red-tape and make suggestions on how best to simplify them.

"Reducing over-regulation and bureaucracy contributes to growth and jobs. Unnecessary rules and red-tape stand in the way of sustainable growth, deter business investment or hinder job creation," the Commission said in a statement. "This is why cutting red-tape on all levels is an integral part of the European Commission's 'Partnership for Jobs and Growth.'"

Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso added: "We are keen to hear which rules need to be simplified because they stand in the way of sustainable growth, deter business investment or hinder job creation."

The consultation is open from June 1st 2005 via the Commission's "Your Voice in Europe" Internet site. The Commission is also promoting the consultation with civil society organisations through its CONECCS database.© DeHavilland Information Services plc
