An innovative scheme engineered to improve e-learning in schools is to be adapted to encourage accessibility and assistive technology developments.

The e-learning technology currently in use at the Regional Support Centre Northern Ireland (RSCni) innovations lab had originally been introduced as a means to simply support college staff embed e-learning in education.

But now the technology is to be additionally used as assistive technology as and when the special education needs and disability order (SENDO) comes into force in September and many are predicting its influence to be felt throughout the UK.

As part of the order's introduction, awareness of the latest technologies available will be highlighted as will their potential benefits.

Further education institutions will be the major beneficiaries of any developments as efforts continue to ensure people with various disabilities can actively learn and assistive IT technology is provided to avoid social and educational exclusion.
