The national network of public libraries in England could be set for a major boost, following renewed calls to revamp the current framework.

According to eGov Monitor, the Museum, Libraries and Archives council (MLA) hopes to have the improved framework for enhanced access and commercial online content in place by the summer.

A national arrangement will be introduced as part of the changes which will allow all libraries to network through a subscription service.

Consumers and library users will benefit greatly from the changes, comments the MLA.

"Although the procurement negotiations are complex, MLA believes that the benefits to libraries and their users are clear", a spokesperson said.

"It will save library staff time, and ensure consistent arrangements at cost effective and transparent prices."

The new framework will be available to all 149 library authorities in England and restricted to between ten and 15 suppliers.© DeHavilland Information Services plc
