Broadcasting council meetings on the Internet is just one of a number of proposals drawn up by Swansea council in an attempt to encourage the public to participate more fully in local democracy.

According to eGov monitor, the web streaming would allow people to follow proceedings from a PC at home or in a community venue or schools.

This innovative suggestion was mooted at yesterday's 'Open Swansea Member Forum' and is now expected to be considered further alongside the other suggestions before being brought before full council for approval in the near future.

Swansea council leader Chris Holley said: "We are determined to find ways to modernise council meetings to make local democracy more open.

"The people of Swansea have asked the council to spend £297 million a year of their money on education, social services, rubbish collection, trading standards, transportation and all sorts of other things.

"We want to encourage and make it easier for them to see how we go about making the decisions that affect their lives up close."

Other moves proposed include wider circulation of council agendas and a fuller use of the council's website to display community information.© DeHavilland Information Services plc
